Participé como oyente en la charla “La influencia de la Arqueología en el Paisaje Urbano de Jerusalén” el pasado jueves 8 de junio, dictada por Joe Uziel en la Universidad Católica y siento la responsabilidad de compartir con ustedes los hechos no sólo tras la conferencia sino tras el denominado movimiento BDS.

Poder escuchar a un antropólogo que ha dedicado más de 20 años de su vida a trabajar en una de las ciudades más ricas en historia del mundo, debería ser considerado por los estudiantes de cualquier facultad como un privilegio. No necesariamente porque compartan sus opiniones, sino porque precisamente ese es el papel de la Academia; enriquecer a sus estudiantes con la mayor cantidad de conocimientos, para formarlos como profesionales integrales. El origen del antropólogo no debería ser considerado como una discapacidad, como tampoco su lugar de trabajo, su religión o cualquier otra característica que lo individualice.

Sin embargo éste fue precisamente el caso; los estudiantes del llamado movimiento BDS, iniciaron una campaña para deslegitimizar la conferencia del antropólogo israelí e impedir que ésta se realizase. Ante la presión, las autoridades de la Universidad se mantuvieron firmes en su posición de defender el derecho a la libre expresión y al conocimiento, lo cual no sólo habla de los principios democráticos de la universidad sino de su deseo de entregar a los alumnos una educación enriquecida y diversa.

Es un hecho que el BDS es un movimiento particularmente paradójico; utiliza el lenguaje de los Derechos Humanos como el centro de su discurso, pero en la práctica se ocupa de negar la libertad de expresión y la libertad de Academia; sus miembros se quejan de ser censurados, pero aplican la censura previa a las opiniones que no les gustan, se autodenominan pacíficos, pero niegan el derecho de Israel a existir.

Es un hecho que los líderes del movimiento BDS, Omar Barghouti y Ali Abunimah, han declarado como objetivo lo que ellos llaman “desmantelar a Israel” por lo que no sólo se niegan a reconocer la existencia de Israel, sino que abogan por su destrucción. Es también un hecho que el logo de la Federación Palestina de Chile es el mapa de Israel, lo que supone la eliminación de éste.

Buscar el desmantelamiento de un país está, en mi humilde opinión, muy lejos de ser el objetivo de un movimiento pacífico, no me habla de derechos humanos y lo que logran con esta línea de discurso, es reagrupar a fanáticos de todas las tendencias y al hacerlo, están fortaleciendo a los radicales que no tienen ningún deseo de ver una solución pacífica del conflicto.

En la charla del Dr. Uziel que tuve la oportunidad de presenciar, habían aproximadamente 100 personas, dentro de las cuales se encontraban los dirigentes del llamado movimiento BDS dentro de la Universidad Católica.

En el artículo “La UC nos vuelve a Decepcionar” publicado en este mismo medio el 14 de Junio, se denuncia que” si bien se abrió un espacio para hacer preguntas éstas fueron abruptamente silenciadas aludiendo a que el invitado tenía una agenda muy ocupada”

Es un hecho que como testigo presencial de la conferencia puedo afirmar con absoluta certeza que los alumnos de dicho movimiento no solo tuvieron la oportunidad de hacer preguntas, sino también de leer en un clima de respeto su comunicado. Pudieron hablar directamente con el expositor para continuar expresando sus opiniones y cuando éstas tuvieron que suspenderse por la apretada agenda del conferencista, personalmente me acerqué a sus líderes para invitarlos a seguir dialogando y expresando sus opiniones cuando ellos quisieran reunirse con él.

Soy de la firme creencia que no hay que tenerle miedo a las opiniones diferentes, éstas enriquecen el debate y fortalecen la democracia, pero censurar previamente una actividad, como pretendía hacerlo el movimiento BDS, es un acto de cobardía y un ataque directo contra la academia, el conocimiento y la libertad.

Alinearse con causas que alegan la defensa de los Derechos Humanos tiene absoluta validez, más aun en un mundo convulsionado, en el cual la solidaridad es fundamental, pero antes de hacerlo es necesario ver más allá, leer entre líneas, investigar y sobre todo conocer los hechos. Porque en nombre de los Derechos Humanos se puede estar haciendo todo lo contrario; perpetuar la violencia y boicotear la paz. #HechosNoManipulación
